Technical SEO audit: what's holding back your ranking

What you don't see, Google penalizes.

We identify what's holding back your visibility on traditional search engines and in AI answers.

Why run a technical SEO audit?

  1. IDENTIFY WHAT'S HOLDING BACK YOUR GROWTH

Indexing errors, loading speed, broken links, missing tags… A technical audit uncovers all the invisible roadblocks preventing your site from performing and gives you a clear action plan to fix them.

  2. IMPROVE YOUR GOOGLE RANKING

A technically sound website is better crawled, better indexed and better ranked. A technical audit is the essential foundation of any effective SEO strategy: without it, all your content efforts are limited.

  3. PREPARE YOUR SITE FOR THE AI ERA (GEO)

Generative engines favor structured, fast and reliable websites. A technical audit optimized for GEO increases your chances of being cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and others, and strengthens your online authority.

Method view
  1. Scope & objectives

We start by understanding your context: technical stack, business objectives, perceived issues and site history. An audit without context produces generic recommendations. We start from your real challenges to prioritize what truly matters.

  2. Technical SEO audit

We analyze all the technical signals that impact your SEO: loading speed, Core Web Vitals, indexing, URL structure, tags, structured data, sitemap, robots.txt, crawl errors. Each point is evaluated and prioritized based on its impact on your visibility.

  3. Performance audit

We measure your site's actual performance: desktop and mobile loading times, resource weight, client-side rendering, cache management and behavior across browsers. We identify bottlenecks and quick wins.

  4. Content & linking audit

We analyze the quality of your existing content: under-optimized pages, keyword cannibalization, weak internal linking, orphan pages, duplicate content. Each problem identified comes with a precise corrective action.

  5. GEO audit

We assess your visibility in generative engines: is your brand cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini on your target queries? Is your content structured to be used as a source by AI? This is the new blind spot of most SEO audits.

  6. Report & action plan

You receive a report structured by priority: quick wins to handle in under 7 days, optimizations to schedule over 30 to 90 days, and in-depth projects. Each recommendation comes with a clear explanation and an impact estimate. No jargon, no page count to impress.

We entrusted Gemeos with a full website redesign and migration, and everything went incredibly smoothly. What stood out most to us was the quality of the art direction: a truly premium, cohesive visual direction, with a clear visual identity and highly polished choices throughout, typography, colors, iconography, pacing, hierarchy, and more. You can tell they have great taste, and above all, a real eye for detail on every screen. On top of that, the team is incredibly responsive and very experienced: they know both design and the technical side inside out. I’d recommend them without hesitation.

What the FAQ?

What is a technical SEO audit?

A technical SEO audit is a complete diagnostic of your site to identify everything holding back its indexing and ranking by Google. It's not about checking whether your copy contains the right keywords: it's an analysis of the site's technical infrastructure, independent of content.

A good audit covers crawlability, performance, URL structure, internal linking, tags, indexing errors, and mobile compatibility. It's the foundation of any serious SEO strategy.

Area of analysisWhat we check
CrawlabilityRobots.txt, sitemap, blocked pages, crawl budget
PerformanceCore Web Vitals, load time, LCP, CLS
StructureSite architecture, canonical URLs, redirects, 404 errors
TagsTitle, meta description, Hn headings, structured data
Internal linkingOrphan links, click depth, anchor text
MobileResponsive, mobile speed, interstitials

At Gemeos, a technical SEO audit is systematically included in our Webflow redesign projects.

Is it worth doing a technical SEO audit during a redesign?

It's actually the best time to do it. A redesign is a unique opportunity to fix the old site's structural problems without creating additional technical debt. If you migrate without a prior audit, you risk reproducing the same mistakes, or even creating new ones: URLs changing without redirects, lost indexed pages, degraded performance.

An audit ahead of a redesign also makes it possible to map out the pages that generate organic traffic: they need to be preserved and properly redirected, not accidentally deleted.

Without an audit before the redesignWith an audit before the redesign
Risk of losing existing organic trafficHigh-performing pages identified and preserved
Missing or incorrect redirectsRedirect plan prepared in advance
Technical errors carried overClean slate from launch
Ranking drop after launchSEO continuity ensured

How do you prioritize technical SEO fixes?

Not all SEO errors have the same impact. Priority is determined along two axes: the severity of the problem (does it block indexing?) and the number of pages affected. A critical error on 1 page is less urgent than a moderate error on 200 pages.

PriorityType of problemConcrete examples
Critical, fix immediatelyBlocks indexing or navigationPages blocked in robots.txt, redirect loops, non-HTTPS site
High, fix within 30 daysSignificantly degrades performanceCore Web Vitals in the red, 404 pages with backlinks, duplicate content
Medium, to scheduleLost visibility opportunityMissing title tags, poor internal linking, non-canonicalized URLs
Low, handle as you goMarginal optimizationsMeta descriptions too long, generic anchor text

How much does a technical SEO audit cost?

A technical SEO audit at Gemeos starts at €1,000. This covers a complete analysis of the site, a prioritized report of the fixes needed, and a debrief session to explain the priorities and the actions to take.

Audit typeIndicative rangeWhat's included
Basic technical audit€1,500 to €2,500Full crawl, prioritized report, debrief
Technical + semantic audit€2,500 to €5,000Technical + keyword analysis + content opportunities
Full pre-redesign audit€3,000 to €6,000Technical + redirect plan + architecture recommendations

A well-executed audit pays for itself quickly: priority fixes often generate measurable organic traffic gains within 60 to 90 days of implementation.

How long does a technical audit take?

A complete technical audit takes between 5 and 10 business days depending on site size. A 50-page site is handled in one week. A 500-page site with several subdomains and a history of migrations can take 2 to 3 weeks.

Site sizeEstimated duration
Under 50 pages3 to 5 business days
50 to 200 pages5 to 8 business days
200 to 500 pages8 to 12 business days
500+ pages2 to 4 weeks

This timeline includes the automated crawl, manual analysis of critical points, writing the prioritized report, and preparing the client debrief. The debrief itself is a step not to be skipped: an audit without an explanation of priorities remains unusable for a non-technical team.

How often should you run an SEO audit?

A complete audit is ideally done once a year, and systematically before any redesign or migration. In between, ongoing monitoring via Google Search Console and a tool like Ahrefs helps catch issues as they arise, without waiting for the next annual audit.

SituationRecommended check
Launch or redesignFull audit required
Every 12 monthsFull maintenance audit
Every quarterPartial audit: performance, new errors
OngoingSearch Console monitoring + Ahrefs alerts
After a Google updateAnalysis of traffic and ranking changes

Do you need a developer to fix SEO issues?

It depends on the nature of the fix. Some technical SEO issues can be fixed directly in the CMS without touching the code: title tags, meta descriptions, 301 redirects, URL structure. Others require technical work: Core Web Vitals optimization, structured data, lazy loading, image compression at the source.

On Webflow, a large share of technical SEO fixes are accessible without a developer, which is one of the platform's concrete advantages over WordPress.

Type of fixDeveloper needed?On Webflow
Title and meta tagsNoNative Webflow interface
301 redirectsNoWebflow redirects panel
Structured data (schema.org)YesCustom HTML embed
Core Web VitalsOften yesImage optimization, third-party scripts
Sitemap and robots.txtNoNative Webflow SEO settings

At Gemeos, developers step in for technical fixes that go beyond the CMS scope, working alongside the SEO team who runs the audit and prioritizes the actions. That's the advantage of having design, development, and SEO on the same team.
